I reinstalled my Windows 7 operating system a week ago and have been slowly getting everything back to the way I liked it before my hard drive crashed. One of the luxuries I enjoyed on my old machine was file transfers that didn’t stop suddenly for no apparent reason. As it turns out, Windows has a built-in feature that automatically “tunes up” your network adapter. Unfortunately, if you have a 64-bit Windows operating system, your computer might be sending network packets faster than the network can handle. I believe this is what I was experiencing through the VPN connection to my corporate office.
I was transferring a database backup file that was 700 megabytes. I would get halfway through the file transfer and it would taper off and then drop off entirely. After searching Google, I came across an article that explained the odd file transfer behavior and suggested a remedy involving editing your Windows registry. I performed this registry modification and have not had the problem since.
